LAURA BASSI
A story about passion, strenght and womanhood
For my final thesis in costume making, I chose to honor an extraordinary figure in the history of science.
Laura Bassi was the first woman in the Western world to be appointed as a university professor — in 1732, at the University of Bologna.

She specialized in experimental physics, making her achievements even more exceptional in a time when women were typically limited to studies in letters and music.
Through this work, I aimed to revive the forgotten story of a woman who made important contributions to the field of electricity and served as an inspiration to many male scientists of her era.
A key part of the concept was to work exclusively with natural and antique materials, sourced from my grandmother’s collection.

Since no known portrait of Laura Bassi exists, I developed the silhouette and color scheme based on early 18th-century fashion in Northern Italy.
